BAMBOO – A RENEWABLE RESOURCE
Bamboo is a woody grass and not a tree in the true sense. Growing up to 1 meter per day, bamboo produces more oxygen than any other plant in the world. In just six months, bamboo grows to its maximum height of up to 40 meters and reaches a diameter of up to 40 cm. Harvesting takes place after approximately 4 years.
Bamboo grows in tropical countries, and the main importing country is currently Asia. Bamboo cultivation is not yet highly industrialized but predominantly small-scale. Bamboo mainly grows in mountainous regions, where it is primarily harvested by hand.
Because bamboo grows extremely fast, large quantities can be felled annually without endangering the stock. New bamboo constantly grows from the root system.
When cultivating bamboo, hardly any fertilizers, pesticides, or artificial irrigation methods are used, as the plants are very resilient and robust.
